TiVo revenue gets Virgin Media boost; shares rise

(Reuters) - TiVo Inc reported better-than-expected quarterly results as it saw higher sales of its trademark digital video recorders at customer Virgin Media Inc , sending its shares up 5 percent in extended trade.

While TiVo continues to sell its set-top boxes, it also licenses its digital video recording technology to cable operators such as Virgin, Charter, DirecTV , Ono, RCN and Suddenlink.

"The number of TiVo subscriptions across the globe grew 41 percent year-over-year this quarter, highlighted by continued success at Virgin Media, which recently reached one million TiVo subscriptions," Chief Executive Tom Rogers said in a statement.

Rogers said Virgin Media contributes the highest number of subscribers to TiVo. Out of a total of 2.7 million subscribers, Virgin Media's share is about 1 million subscribers.

Total subscriptions grew by 230,000 in the second quarter.

TiVo owns hundreds of patents and regularly sues other companies to protect its intellectual property. A good chunk of its revenue comes from litigation settlements.

Billionaire Charlie Ergen-led Dish Network Corp and EchoStar Corp in May agreed to pay TiVo $500 million to settle a patent dispute.

TiVo has been facing rising legal costs as it fights patent lawsuits against Verizon Communications Inc , Motorola Mobility Inc and Time Warner Cable related to video recording technology.

"In the second quarter, litigation cost was about $12.5 million," Rogers told Reuters. "With Motorola, Cisco, Time Warner and Verizon litigations moving forward, those expenses will remain heavy."

The company is preparing to go to trial in October against Verizon.

Verizon, which originally filed six patent claims, recently pulled a fifth patent from its case against TiVo.

"I think once they have the Verizon litigation behind them, they may end up having somewhat lower legal expenses. The biggest period of expenses is right before trial, and we're in there right now," MDC Financial Research analyst Michael Cohen said.

TiVo may also look to settle with Verizon before trial as it did with Verizon's rival AT&T Inc in January, when the wireless operator agreed to pay TiVo at least $215 million as well as monthly licensing fees.

Analyst Cohen said any settlement with Verizon could be in the range of $250 million to $400 million.

TiVo expects a net loss in the range of $27 million to $29 million for the third quarter.

Analysts were expecting a net loss of $20.7 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue in the second quarter at TiVo rose 7 percent to $65.3 million.

Net loss widened to $27.7 million, or 23 cents per share, in the second quarter, from $19.6 million, or 17 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected a loss of 24 cents per share on revenue of $54.3 million.

Shares of TiVo were up at $9.80 in extended trade. They closed at $9.36 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday.

'Worst year ever': Number of West Nile cases sets record

Wed Aug 29, 2012 12:47pm EDT

Aug 29 (Reuters) - A total of 1,590 U.S. cases of West Nile virus, including 66 deaths, have been reported through late August this year, the highest human toll reported since the mosquito-borne disease was first detected in the country in 1999, health officials said on Wednesday.

The toll is rising quickly and "w e think the numbers will continue to rise," said Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the U .S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's D ivision of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases.

Through last week, 1,118 cases and 41 deaths had been reported, and the updated figures represent a 40 percent in crease in the number of cases and a 61 percent spike in the number of deaths.

In hard-hit Texas, the number of confirmed cases soared to 733, up 197 from last week, said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. Deaths reached 31, up 10 from last week.

"It looks like it is going to be our worst year ever," said Lakey. "As I look at the data, I'm not convinced we have peaked."

Narcissism--Distorted-Face of Narcissistic Leadership ...

One of Steve Jobs? great accomplishment; putting his? petulance, narcissism, rudeness, idiosyncrasies? in the service of perfection. ~Malcolm Gladwell

When you say; he/she is a ?narcissist?- just what does that mean? People throw around the terms? narcissist, narcissism and many don?t have the vaguest idea of what the words really mean. So what is a narcissist and narcissism? According to one definition; people with narcissistic personality believe that they?re superior to others and have little regard for other people?s feelings? But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism? Narcissistic leadership is a common form of leadership. To critics, narcissistic leaders are driven by unyielding arrogance, self-absorption, and a personal egotistic need for power and admiration. To proponents, all people, especially leaders, need a healthy dose of narcissism?it?s the engine that drives leadership. Narcissists have the need to uphold and maintain a false self ? a concocted, grandiose, and demanding psychological construct typical of the narcissistic personality disorder. The false self is projected to the world in order to garner their? narcissistic supply, i.e.,?adulation, admiration, or even notoriety and infamy. Any kind of attention is usually deemed to be preferable to obscurity. For example, cooked books, corporate fraud, bending the (GAAP or other) rules, sweeping problems under the carpet, over-promising, making grandiose claims (the ?vision thing?)? are hallmarks of a narcissist in action?

In the article The Narcissistic Leader?by Michael Maccoby writes: ?Narcissism gets a bad rap. Far from being the malignant personality disorder most people believe it to be, it?s actually an essential quality for visionary business leaders. The popular misconceptions is that narcissism is ?synonymous with self-absorption, egocentricity or just bad manners?, instead ?a true narcissist is the kind of person who (1) doesn?t listen to anyone else when he/she believes in doing something and (2) has a precise vision of how things should be.? Of course, simply possessing these two qualities are hardly sufficient for business success without basic strategic intelligence, which is essential. Strategic intelligence is made up of five major elements: foresight, systems thinking, visioning, motivating and partnering.? Many personalities and styles work, and a wise leader will play to personal strengths, and balance weaknesses by effective partnerships with colleagues. Narcissistic leaders?are classic ?good news, bad news? for companies who have them. On one hand, narcissists? have the ability to envision new directions for a company, the courage and self-belief to make changes, and the navigational skills to chart the course; assuming that they possess the strategic intelligence that makes them productive. Bad news, of course, is that these same qualities of vision and self-belief make them difficult to work with, impervious to advice, and even deluded. Narcissists aren?t more effective as business leaders than other personality types. Different leadership tasks, different industries, and different social and economic circumstances favor some types of personality over others; and, in these times, today, it suits the narcissistic personality better than ever before?

In the article Narcissist: Good Leader, Bad Teammate? by Adi Gaskell writes:? Narcissists typically have many of the qualities we associate with those of a strong leader. They have high self-esteem, confidence, and display authority. Research reveals that narcissists automatically take over the helm of a rudderless group of individuals. Research from Cornell University, for instance, reveals that more than one narcissist in a group damages performance of that group, as the two stags battle it out for top status. If they performed on their own, however, research showed that they were perceived to perform better by onlookers, due no doubt to their confidence and self belief. However, when their output was measured objectively, without knowing who had produced it, it was found to be of lesser quality than less narcissistic people in the team. Further research supports these findings. A study published recently in Psychological Science looked at information flow within a team and the effect of this on decision-making. Interestingly, similar gap between perception and reality exist in regard to communication effectiveness as was observed in the previous study. In the second study, just as in the first, onlookers believed that more information was shared by the narcissistic leader. Those in the group actually thought that the charismatic leaders were doing a great job. The reality, however, was that they were not. Information sharing was less than in groups led by non-narcissistic leaders, with end result being poor decision generated by the narcissist led group. So the message seems to be that narcissistic leaders are great at pulling the wool over our eyes, but not so great at delivering the results their bravado suggests?

In the article The Workplace Narcissist by James Adonis writes:? A narcissist, they say, is probably a narcissist for life.? It can be your boss, colleague, or employee. But since many narcissists use their charisma to fulfill their obsession for career success, they?re usually found in upper echelons of the corporate hierarchy. Professor Keith Campbell, University of Georgia, author of ?The Narcissism Epidemic?, says; main difference between narcissism in bosses compared with narcissism in colleagues is the issue of power. In both cases, I would suggest maintaining the best boundaries you can? Do not be overly trusting, keep records of interactions, temper your feedback so that the narcissist does not get overly reactive? and find better co-workers at the soonest opportunity. However, this advice is especially relevant with the narcissistic boss. The three words; temper-your-feedback are important because giving a narcissist feedback can sometimes make the problem worse. In a study of over 100 CEOs conducted?by researchers at Pennsylvania State University found that narcissistic bosses were more likely to engage in risky strategies. Why? Because of the need for visibility: After all, the more daring their vision and strategy, higher their chances for attention. They desperately want to be noticed? not necessarily adored, but noticed. An analysis by Florida State University concluded, unsurprisingly, that workplaces with narcissistic people have lower levels of job satisfaction and productivity, and greater amounts of stress. Approximately one per cent of the population can be diagnosed with narcissism; the curious thing: it?s more prevalent in men than in women. But women are catching up. Psychology professors Jean Twenge and Josh Foster have calculated that growth in narcissism since 2002 has been stronger among women than men. In study by psychologists, University of Michigan; they discovered that narcissists are more prone to health problems,?particularly hypertension and heart disease, because they?re always so aggressive?

In the article Narcissists Look Like Good Leaders. But Are They? by Matthew Philip writes: Apparently, we?ve been duped. While narcissists may look like?better leaders, according to a new study by a group of psychology researchers, University of Amsterdam, they?re actually really bad at leading. Here?s study abstract: Although generally perceived as arrogant and overly dominant, narcissistics?are particularly skilled at radiating image of prototypically effective leader. As a result, they tend to emerge as leaders in group settings. Despite people?s positive perceptions of narcissists as leaders, it was thus far unknown if and how leaders? narcissism is related to the actual performance of those they lead. In the study we used a hidden profile paradigm to provide evidence for discord between positive image of narcissists as leaders and the reality in terms of group performance. We proposed and found that although narcissistic leaders are perceived as effective due to their display of authority, leaders? narcissism actually inhibits information exchange between group members and thereby negatively affects group performance. Findings indicate perception and reality can be at odds, which has important practical and theoretical implications?

In the article Nip Narcissism Before It Nips You?by ExecutiveLeadership?writes:? Self-awareness can break the destructive pattern of narcissism, one of the most common characteristics of high achievers, says a top gun on leadership. Narcissism is both creative and destructive force. It can drive corporate success when leaders blend their own search for self-improvement with improvement of their companies? performance. But it also can run amok and cause corporate meltdowns. A clinically recognized disorder, narcissism is a pathological reaction to problems with self-worth, says Manfred F.R. Kets?de Vries. It shows up in the need to prove that you?re special and entitled to special treatment. Other traits: selfishness, lack of empathy, enviousness, exploitation and a need for constant attention. Narcissists feel that rules apply only to others, which may be contagious and encourage an entire organization to take the low road. Narcissists may throw tantrums, which will drive away stable business partners and clients. Those who remain will tell narcissistic leaders what they want to hear. Quite a few leaders in the ancient world came to believe they were gods?

Narcissists bring plusses and minuses to their roles as leaders, says Michael Maccoby. On the plus side, they bring great vision, an ability to see the big picture and, as a result, the opportunity to change very rules of the game. They are also especially gifted in attracting followers, usually through skillful use of language and their charisma? On the minus side, narcissistic leaders can be poor listeners, sensitive to criticism, lacking in empathy and relentless and ruthless in the pursuit of victory. According to Maccoby; to be productive leaders, narcissists must recognize their potential shortcomings and work to avoid traps of their own personalities? Narcissus was the very handsome fellow in Greek mythology who, because of his indifference and disdain toward others, was punished by the gods by falling in love with his own image. He was so enraptured by his beauty that he was unable to pull himself away from his own reflection; wasted away and died. Well, according to recent research, Narcissus has spawned many offspring in our current generation, and narcissism is alive and well. One study found that 30% of young people were classified as narcissistic, according to a widely used psychological test. That number has doubled in the last 30 years. Another study reported a 40% decline among young people?with empathy, a personality attribute inversely related to narcissism, since the 1980s. According to Dr. Jim Taylor; these findings aren?t surprising to anyone who pays attention to ?it?s all about me? culture, in which we currently live. ?Certainly, shift in societal values have contributed to the cultural messages of narcissism in which young people are presently immersed. It?s one thing to see that there is a growing number of narcissists,?however, the real concern is not the individual narcissists among us; but, when our society embraces and accepts narcissism as the norm. The indifference, egotism, disrespect and lack of consideration that are central to narcissism are also reflective of increasingly polarized and vitriolic tone of current body politic, unethical corporate behavior, rise in cheating among students, and gamut of bad behavior among professional athletes? As Pogo noted: We have met the enemy, and he is us. This is definitely not a rosy picture, and definitely not an optimistic view of the future?

Narcissists?want power; they are egotistical? usually charming, extraverted? but, they don?t necessarily make better leaders.

you cancell flood insurance you paid full | Bnr.Co

Yes, you can. Flood insurance is ALWAYS paid in full, though. You can ONLY get your money back, if you cancel because you sold the house. Cancelling for any OTHER reason, you dont get any money back. The POINT of that, is to keep people from buying flood insurance at the beginning of hurricane (flood) season, and cancelling it as soon as hurricane season is over.

Are You Tired of Him (or Her)? | Psychology Today

Do you come home and feel bored?

He starts to talk and you know what he?s going to say before he says it, and you wish he just stopped. She seems to always need to be validated when it?s not really necessary. And, you begin to wonder if there isn?t someone better out there.

Boredom can mean many things in a relationship.

?

When Love Fades: It could be that the rush of love is over and you realize who he really is, and that you?re simply not compatible. Or, you may be triggered to withdraw from her (icy intimacy); and yet the problem may be you and not her.

Love is a crazy state of being.? It creates a field, not unlike those found in physics, called the field of intimacy. Once in the field, your yearnings come to the surface, and often with great intensity. This rush of hormones, longing and wish fulfillment gets concretized in lovemaking and the imaginings of a future together.

Then, the field lightens and you see her for who she is. If you are lucky (and healthy) you fall in love again; but this time with a real person. Too many lovers wake up disappointed or?criticised. In cases like this, you grow bored because you realize you have little in common with him or her. This is a legitimate reason to consider calling things off.

?

The Wounds of Childhood: It may be hard to believe, but growing tired of your partner or spouse can have its roots in a damaged childhood. Perhaps, you didn?t receive the attention you craved from your parents. You were invisible in their eyes and felt out of favor, believing that your siblings were your parents' pride and joy. You protected yourself by finding comfort in solitude.

Naturally, you carry resentment into relationships with others, including a lover. The experience of intimacy along with your damaged childhood causes you to distance yourself.? You would rather be alone than risk being close to someone.

Or, you were idealized by adoring parents. The early idealization of love worked just fine, but when she stopped seeing you as the center of her universe, you recoiled. Instead of accepting a more adult relationship, you stew in outrage.? Psychologically, you distance yourself, and it is expressed as boredom. You ask yourself: why should I bother with a partner who doesn?t meet all my needs?

Boredom can have many roots, and not all come from a damaged childhood.

?

Destructive Power Struggles: Think about couples that relentlessly engage in tiresome power struggles. Do you and your partner argue too much?

Consider the following.? Do you fight about money, or turning off the lights at night, or who wakes up when the baby?s crying, or the way she dresses or his bad manners?

A relationship is a reverberating circuit and when a positive vibe flows, more positivity comes about.? I want to do things for you given how supported you make me feel. On, the other hand, a negative feedback loop can kill a relationship. If you are not going to do things for me, why should I put myself out for you???

Boredom can be a defense. Your mind doesn?t want to deal with anger, disappointment or hurt, so you block emotions and feel bored. Leaving important things unsaid for too long can end with two bored people living parallel lives, each dreaming of a more happy life elsewhere.

This can go on for years and years.

Sadly, boredom can enter your sex life as well. The rush of fresh love fades and you know his body.? Now, lovemaking is truly about enjoying your partner, and not just idealizing a ravishing new love. Since sex is so much in the head, power struggles can do a lot of damage. Who wants to let go and be intimate, if he?s so rejecting and needs to be right all the time? Can you hold her lovingly if you?re so mad, or will you just turn over and go to sleep after coitus, leaving her wondering if you really care?

Many marriages fade because of things left unsaid. You both carry anger which segues into disappointment and boredom.

Relationships are like living beings that require challenges and growth spurts. And, if you don?t grow together, you will certainly wilt together.

?

Boredom as a Symptom: Boredom is not just a feeling, it?s also a symptom.?

Depression in its many forms can beat the vitality out of a person. They lose a dynamic engagement with life, which can look a lot like being bored. If this is your situation, it?s your responsibility to make sure that you deal with the depression before blaming everything on your partner. You may indeed be unhappy in your relationship, but note that depression often leads to apathy or lack of happiness in things that used to give you joy.??

For instance, about 13 percent of women experience postpartum depression. Hormonal changes can trigger this depression, but the effect is that you end up distancing from your partner. You simply have no interest in his struggles at work or other normal needs: he has become a bore.

While your husband may be falling short in some ways, postpartum depression paints him as a Neanderthal who doesn?t deserve the time of day. This mood disorder is very serious and needs to be treated immediately. It is no reason to end a relationship, which at one point was filled with love, laughter, and joy.

Depression can also arise in the midst of a midlife crisis. The stark realization that life has its limits makes people reassess; and some get depressed.

You realize that you can?t look young anymore. Perhaps, your midlife crisis is triggered by the death of your mother or father.? Or you have a health crisis and it?s a wakeup call. Many marriages end at this time; and it?s not uncommon to hear that he was bored with her, or that she had lost interest in him. Once again, boredom may have its source in depression?rather than simply having outgrown another person.?

Here are some tips if you are bored with your partner or if he is bored with you:

1.? The Risks of Early Love:?Boredom can come about after the frenzy of early love has faded.? The question is; can you both fall in love with the real person that you are sleeping with?

? ? ? ? ? a.? If so, you?re lucky and boredom will soon cease to be an issue.

????????? b.? If not, maybe he or she is not the right person for you.

Novel vaccine additive to enhance the body's immune response shows promise in mice

Oxford University scientists have discovered a compound that greatly boosts the effect of vaccines against viruses like flu, HIV and herpes in mice.

An 'adjuvant' is a substance added to a vaccine to enhance the immune response and offer better protection against infection.

The Oxford University team, along with Swedish and US colleagues, have shown that a type of polymer called polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a potent adjuvant for test vaccines against HIV, flu and herpes when given in mice.

The researchers were part-funded by the UK Medical Research Council and report their findings in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Mice given a single dose of a flu vaccine including PEI via a nasal droplet were completely protected against a lethal dose of flu. This was a marked improvement over mice given the flu vaccine without an adjuvant or in formulations with other adjuvants.

The Oxford researchers now intend to test the PEI adjuvant in ferrets, a better animal model for studying flu. They also want to understand how long the protection lasts for. It is likely to be a couple of years before a flu vaccine using the adjuvant could be tested in clinical trials in humans, the researchers say.

'Gaining complete protection against flu from just one immunisation is pretty unheard of, even in a study in mice,' says Professor Quentin Sattentau of the Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford University, who led the work. 'This gives us confidence that PEI has the potential to be a potent adjuvant for vaccines against viruses like flu or HIV, though there are many steps ahead if it is ever to be used in humans.'

HIV, flu and herpes are some of the most difficult targets to develop vaccines against. HIV and flu viruses are able to change and evolve to escape immune responses stimulated by vaccines. There aren't any effective vaccines against HIV and herpes as yet, and the flu vaccine needs reformulating each year and doesn't offer complete protection to everyone who receives it. Finding better adjuvants could help in developing more effective vaccines against these diseases.

Most vaccines include an adjuvant. The main ingredient of the vaccine whether it is a dead or disabled pathogen, or just a part of the virus or bacteria causing the disease primes the body's immune system so it knows what to attack in case of infection. But the adjuvant is needed as well to stimulate this process.

While the need for adjuvants in vaccines has been recognised for nearly 100 years, the way adjuvants work has only recently been understood. The result has been that only a small set of adjuvants is used in current vaccines, often for historical reasons.

The most common adjuvant by far is alum, an aluminium-containing compound that has been given in many different vaccines worldwide for decades. However, alum is not the most potent adjuvant for many vaccine designs.

'There is a need to develop new adjuvants to get the most appropriate immune response from vaccines,' says Professor Sattentau, who is also a James Martin Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford.

The Oxford University team found that PEI, a standard polymer often used in genetic and cell biology, has strong adjuvant activity.

When included in a vaccine with a protein from HIV, flu or herpes virus, mice subsequently mounted a strong immune response against that virus. The immune response was stronger than with other adjuvants that are currently being investigated.

The team also showed that PEI is a potent adjuvant in rabbits, showing the effect is not just specific to mice and could be general.

Another potential advantage of PEI is that it works well as an adjuvant for 'mucosal vaccines'. These vaccines are taken up the nose or in the mouth and absorbed through the mucus-lined tissues there, getting rid of any pain and anxiety from a needle. Mucosal vaccines may also be better in some ways as mucosal tissues are the sites of infection for these diseases (airways for respiratory diseases, genital mucosa for HIV and herpes).

Professor Sattentau suggests that: 'In the best of all possible worlds, you could imagine people would have one dose of flu vaccine that they'd just sniff up their nose or put under their tongue. And that would be it: no injections and they'd be protected from flu for a number of years.

'It's just a vision for the future at the moment, but this promising adjuvant suggests it is a vision that is at least possible.'

Notes to Editors

* The body's immune system is made up of two arms: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The adaptive immune system consists of the antibodies and immune cells (T and B cells) the body develops specifically to combat a particular foreign agent.

The innate immune system had been thought of as playing a more primitive, non-specific role in protecting against invaders like viruses and parasites. However, it is now realised that the innate immune system is essential in kicking off any immune response. It needs to be activated first to generate an adaptive immune response.

But the innate immune system doesn't just press the start button. It tailors the body's adaptive immune response, deciding on what particular mix of antibodies and T cells is needed and teaching them what to attack.

It is the adjuvants in vaccines that stimulate the innate immune system. So having the right adjuvant can help the body produce the most appropriate immune response to protect against future infection.

US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

The BBC's Pallab Ghosh, who interviewed Armstrong, says he had an ''ice cool attitude'' which made him an excellent astronaut

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Armstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

The statement did not say where Armstrong died.

He had surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries on 7 August.

Green Blog: Report Finds Americans Wasteful of Food

Forty percent of the food Americans have available to them goes uneaten, according to a report released this week by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Most of this nutrient-rich uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills.

?This issue has received very little attention in the U.S.,? said Dana Gunders, a project scientist at the N.R.D.C. who specializes in food and agriculture. Yet a significant amount of land, energy and fresh water go into producing food for American consumers.

The report, which was mostly based on a compilation of existing research, states that edible food is wasted ? or ?lost? ? in the country at many different levels of food production, distribution and consumption.

A study published by the Department of Agriculture about food loss in 2008 ? the most recent year for which a full analysis has been done ? states that $165.6 billion in food was wasted that year by food retailers and consumers. The study goes on to say that $390 worth of food per person was wasted in the United States in 2008.

While there is much speculation over the predominant reasons for the food loss ? from unregulated expiration dating to a cultural distaste for aesthetically displeasing fruits and vegetables ? one of the most telling aspects of the report is that there is not enough data to make a firm determination.

Ms. Gunders said the N.R.D.C. would like to see the government prioritize the issue of food loss and set goals for reducing the waste. Twenty-five percent of the fresh water used in the country ?goes into getting food to our tables,? the report says, and Ms. Gunders said that because of the severe drought afflicting the country, ?it?s a really opportune time to take a closer look at this issue.?

Off to college: freshmen arrive for fall semester

Laundry baskets of clothes, boxes of dorm supplies and bundles of nerves were among the cargo toted by parents and their children, now college freshmen.

But they couldn't help but to smile or shake their heads as upperclassmen applauded and danced for them as they drove through blaring pop music and a Penn State colored balloon arch to their dormitory buildings.

Thursday was move-in day for many of the 1,447 freshmen moving into campus residence halls and off-campus housing at Penn State Altoona.

"It's a normal class size," spokeswoman Shari Routch said.

All students are scheduled to arrive at campus on Sunday, but dozens of upperclassmen volunteered to help freshmen as they moved in for the 2012 fall semester.

"I know what it's like to be a freshman. It's exciting for what is to come, but it's nerve-racking because I didn't know if I was going to be OK." student leader Jordan Ley of Hanover said.

Freshman Taylor Hershberger carries some things to her dorm room Thursday at St. Francis University.

Despite all of the things Megan Scipio of Philadelphia unpacked from her U-Haul, her transition to Penn State Altoona would be tough without taking along her best friend from high school as her roommate.

"She's like a sister to me," Scipio, who's planning to study civil engineering, said.

Her roommate, Ashley Newby-Hall of Philadelphia, was making her first trip to the mall in town, Scipio said as she unpacked.

While some freshmen socialized after unpacking their luggage, others went to work at part-time jobs.

Donald and Ann Hurley of New Jersey waited for their freshman daughter who was finishing her first day of work as a server at the campus' Port Sky Cafe.

While they soaked in the Penn State atmosphere, the Hurleys were surprised to see the campus book store selling books about Joe Paterno.

The criminal acts committed by Paterno's former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, with children on Penn State's University Park campus may be the top Penn State news story, but to the Hurleys, it is no reason to be apprehensive about sending their child to a Penn State campus.

"The scandal has no bearing on academics of the school. It is a top academic school. That's what we look for," Hurley said.

Steve Zarlinski, retired superintendent of Brockway Area School District, helped one of his grandaughters, a freshman pre-medical student, move into her dorm on Thursday.

"It's a great campus, a good school. It's safe and clean," Zarlinski said.

With his parents more than 200 miles away in Collegeville, the first day at Penn State Altoona wasn't as strange as Tyler Lozniak, 18, thought.

"I like it, I can do things on my own time," he said.

His mother would be proud to know he plans on keeping his room clean.

More than 450 college freshmen also moved into dormitories Thursday at Saint Francis University in Loretto. Classes there begin Monday.

U.N. points finger at Iran over arms supply to Syria

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Iran appears to be supplying Syria with weapons, the United Nations said on Wednesday, as the 17-month conflict that began as a popular uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad slides deeper into civil war.

The U.N. accusation backs charges by Western officials that Iran is providing funds, weapons and intelligence support to Assad in his bid to crush the opposition. Syrian rebels also say Tehran has sent Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah fighters.

"The Secretary-General has repeatedly expressed his concern about the arms flows to the two parties in Syria, which in some cases appear to violate resolution 1747 passed by this council banning arms exports under Chapter 7 authority," U.N. political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman told the U.N. Security Council.

In a prepared copy of his speech, Feltman noted that the ban was on Iranian arms exports. Resolution 1747 bans arms exports by Iran under Chapter 7 of the U.N. charter, which allows the Security Council to authorize actions ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military intervention.

The resolution was passed in response to Iran's defiance of U.N. demands that it halt its nuclear enrichment program. Iran rejects allegations by Western nations and their allies that it is developing nuclear weapons.

Next week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend a summit meeting of leaders of non-aligned developing nations in Iran. He will also meet with senior Iranian officials to discuss "Iran's nuclear program, terrorism, human rights and the crisis in Syria," his spokesman said.

Feltman also reiterated U.N. concerns at weapons being smuggled between Lebanon and Syria.

"Both the government and the opposition are focusing on military operations and the use of force, with government forces using heavy weapons on population centers," Feltman told the Security Council during a regular briefing on the Middle East.

"The Syrian people are suffering grievously from the appalling further militarization of this conflict," he said.

A U.N. Security Council panel of independent experts that monitors sanctions against Iran has uncovered several examples of Iran transferring arms to Syria's government. Damascus has accused Qatar and Saudi Arabia of arming rebels determined to topple Assad's government.

The United Nations has said more than 18,000 people have died and some 170,000 people have fled the country as a result of the fighting in Syria. U.N. aid chief Valerie Amos has said that up to 2.5 million people in Syria needed aid.

"This conflict has taken on a particularly brutal and violent character," Amos told a news conference in New York on Wednesday after visiting Syria and Lebanon last week.

"We face problems with access to people in need, particularly where there is intense and ongoing fighting, but funding is also holding us back. If we had more resources, we could reach more people," she said.

Good news for banana lovers: Help may be on the way to slow that rapid over-ripening

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A solution finally may be at hand for the number one consumer gripe about bananas: their tendency to ripen, soften and rot into an unappetizing mush, seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Scientists speaking on August 22 in Philadelphia at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society described efforts to develop a spray-on coating that consumers could use to delay the ripening of those 6.4 billion pounds of bananas that people in the U.S. eat every year.

The coating is a so-called "hydrogel," a superabsorbent material like those with many medical and commercial uses, made from chitosan, a substance derived from shrimp and crab shells. Xihong Li, Ph.D., who presented the report, noted that chitosan is attracting considerable attention in efforts to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer due to its action in killing bacteria that cause produce to rot, low cost and other properties. Until now, however, it has not been used to slow the ripening of bananas.

"We found that by spraying green bananas with a chitosan aerogel, we can keep bananas fresh for up to 12 days," said Li, who is the study's leader. "Once bananas begin to mature, they quickly become yellow and soft, and then they rot. We have developed a way to keep bananas green for a longer time and inhibit the rapid ripening that occurs. Such a coating could be used at home by consumers, in supermarkets or during shipment of bananas."

Li explained that bananas, like other fresh fruit and vegetables, are alive and actually "breathing," or respirating. He is with Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Tianjin, China. Like other fresh fruit and vegetables, bananas stay alive after picking. Like people, bananas breathe, or respire, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide ? but through their skin. The more a banana respires, the quicker it ripens. Unlike many other fruits, the respiration rate in bananas does not slow down, and bananas do not ripen slowly. The banana's pulp releases a chemical that boosts respiration, and the pulp converts into the sugars that produce that sweet, banana taste. As respiration continues, however, the process speeds up, and bananas become unpleasantly sweet and mushy. Bacteria on the banana skin start to thrive and cause the banana to rot.

In their study, Li's team showed that the chitosan hydrogel coating slowed down respiration and killed bacteria that cause rotting, keeping bananas fresh for almost two weeks. But banana lovers should not go bananas over the hydrogel coating just yet. Li's team is on the trail of a new ingredient for producing the hydrogel that would replace an existing ingredient that would not be used commercially.

This study was supported by a National Natural Science Foundation of China Grant and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.

Dot Earth Blog: University of Texas Compounds Conflict Question in Review of Gas Report

As I wrote recently, the University of Texas, Austin, appropriately initiated an independent review of the report from its Energy Institute on gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, methods. The review was ordered after the Public Accountability Initiative, a nonprofit research group, pointed out previously undisclosed financial ties between a leader of the report, Charles Groat, and a drilling company.

Last week, however, the same watchdog group pointed out that the announced leader of the independent review, Norman Augustine, a past presidential science and technology adviser and leader of important technical assessments for NASA and Congress, is receiving substantial payments from ConocoPhilips for past service on the board of directors.

The university has defended the choice, noting Augustine?s record of achievement as an analyst of tough technical and scientific questions. The editorial board of the San Antonio Express newspaper said Augustine?s ?ties to the energy industry clearly disqualify him from leading an independent review.? I think it?s a close call given his clear record of public service, but agree with the paper?s view that the school could have chosen more carefully.

And, if it still had settled on Augustine, the university could have been more completely forthcoming about his substantial income from ConocoPhillips, a company that ? as the NPR regional news project State Impact reported last week ? calls itself ?one of the nation?s largest natural gas producers.?

Click here for more background on this issue, and the importance of disclosing potential conflicts of interest ahead of time if credibility and impact are goals.

3 Podcasting Tools You Can Use Instead of ... - Tanya Smith Online

bigstock Podcast D Text Design 25280777 3 Podcasting Tools You Can Use Instead of Cinch.fm By now, you may have heard Cinch.fm is leaving us.? Sad day, I know.? Cinch.fm was one of the online resources I pointed people to all the time.? Quick and easy to use, you could record audio lessons, roving thoughts, news bytes and more.? And you could do? this all by computer or your phone while you?re out and about, sharing it on your social sites at the click of a button.

Alas, the service shut down on August 20, 2012.

So?you need options for accomplishing the same thing?? Need a way to capture your audios that can be shared consistently across your online network?? Being the ?walking Google? that I am, I?ve got a few for you.

#1 ? Spreaker

Spreaker.com is an online app for creating and sharing live audio content across the Internet.? They target users who want to be seen as ?Radio DJs? and I?ve seen them expand their features just within the last few months.? Spreaker is a simple way to host personal radio shows that can be streamed live and heard through a widget that feeds to all the major social media and mobile platforms.

Great features? No need to install anything.? You can broadcast live on Facebook.? You can create your own playlist and schedule your show at the time you choose.

They have a free plan, which is great for starting out.? If you need more time (since the free version limits you to 30 minute recordings), you?ll want to upgrade.? Starting at $39/year, plans are pretty affordable.

#2 ? Audio Acrobat

I?m a fan of the founders of this platform.? They started out years ago with the intention of creating a way for women to have their voices heard loud and clear using online? media.

Catch my interview with the founder here

(Note: I used BlogTalkRadio to conduct the interview, which is another way to podcast.? I won?t highlight them here because so many people already use their service, but it?s another one to check out.? Just be ready to invest in the monthly service because it offers more flexibility with recordings than their free plan.)

Ok, back to AudioAcrobat.com ?

These guys give you lots and lots and lots of options so it?s not just a podcasting service.? You can record coaching sessions, audio interviews, audio ?postcards?, and more.? Share your podcast easily with iTunes and other directories.? Preschedule posts to go out when you want.? You can even use your iPhone to create episodes that you upload right into your account.

I love their customer service and they also have a great affiliate program, one of the first I ever made commission from because people just loved using them once they drooled over all the features.

Basic plan is $19.95 monthly.? All plans come with a free 30 day trial.

#3 ? Evoca

Evoca.com is another great tool for podcasting.? They tend to market to people who want to do audio interviews because of a really great integration that some people don?t realize can work very well ? Skype.? When you record an interview without? the right tools over Skype, the sound is not always quality EXCEPT I have had no issues whatsoever when tying Evoca with it.

Using Skype with Evoca gives you crystal clear, no-cost phone connections, even if you?re interviewing someone across the globe.? Just join your interviewee on your Evoca-provided dedicated phone number.

Idea alert?? You could use Evoca?s embeddable widget on your website for testimonials.? People share their comments using the widget like online recorder on your website and it?s much like leaving someone a voice message.

Post interviews with Evoca quickly to your website or blog, Facebook fan page or profile page and Twitter.? Plans start at $6.95/month and you can test them out with a free trial.

I?m sure there are other tools out there, but these three are my favorite and if you?re looking for a way to replace Cinch.fm?s service, check them out and see what suits your fancy.

Shout out to the Cinch.fm folks and all the best in your future endeavors.? We?re sad to see you go.
