Local Songwriter Pays Tribute to the Troops

MT. VERNON - A local songwriter wrote a tribute for U.S. troops stationed overseas. "A Soldiers' Song," written by Greg Backes and performed by the Mt. Vernon High School Choir.

"It was drawn from having two boys in the military and seeing the sacrifice our military pays," Backes said. "I'm just wanting to get people to realize, that even though we are out of Iraq, we still have soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and other places,"

Backes is a part time music teacher. He says his students have a different perspective on the song and the world.

"My 4th and 5th graders, they've never lived in world when our soldiers weren't at war from the United States," Backes said.
