Chantal Petitclerc Named Team Canada Chef de Mission for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 29, 2012) - Chantal Petitclerc, one of Canada's most decorated athletes of all time, has been appointed Team Canada's Chef de Mission for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The only Canadian athlete to win gold medals at Commonwealth, Olympic and Paralympic Games, Petitclerc holds world records in three different wheelchair racing events.

"I have such a strong attachment to the Commonwealth Games, dating all the way back to 1990 when I was a silver medalist in Auckland, New Zealand-the first time that events for elite athletes with a disability were included on the sport programme," said Petitclerc, whose appointment was announced today on CBC's Sports Day in Canada broadcast. "In 2006, I was honoured to serve as Team Canada's flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. It was truly one of the highlights of my career."

Petitclerc also has two 800-metre gold medals from the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England (2002) and Melbourne (2006). Her trophy case includes a staggering 21 Paralympic medals (including 14 gold) and the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canadian athlete of the year.

"There are so many reasons to be thrilled with Chantal's appointment as our Chef de Mission in Glasgow," added Dr. Andrew Pipe, President of Commonwealth Games Canada. "A former flag bearer, multiple medalist, and someone with a deep appreciation for the athlete experience at the highest levels of international competition. Not to mention the fact that Glasgow 2014 will feature more events for elite athletes with a disability than any previous Commonwealth Games."

Dr. Pipe went on to praise Petitclerc's proven abilities as a spokesperson and motivational speaker. "Should Canada decide to launch a bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Chantal will most certainly be one of our most influential ambassadors," he said.

Petitclerc will assume her duties immediately in preparation for a first site visit that is expected to take place in February.

Want some taste with that ice cream?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nonfat cheese that tastes like plastic. Low-calorie soda that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Sugar-free brownies that crumble like Styrofoam.

Dieters have learned an important lesson: When you take the fat and calories out of your favorite treats, you sometimes have to say goodbye to the taste too.

But snack brands like Dreyer's/Edy's ice cream, Hershey's chocolate and Lay's potato chips are trying to solve this age-old dieter's dilemma by rolling out so-mid-calorie goodies that have more fat and calories than the snacks of earlier diet crazes but less than the original versions. They're following the lead of soda companies like Pepsi and Dr Pepper that introduced mid-calorie drinks last year.

It's hard to isolate sales of mid-calorie snacks since they also usually have reduced fat, or other healthy attributes like reduced sodium. But sales of all foods and drinks in which the amount of things like fat, sugar, salt, carbohydrates have been actively reduced during production have risen 16 percent to $51.72 billion since 2006, according to research firm Euromonitor International.

The mid-calorie trend is hitting at a time when companies that make sugary and salty treats are being blamed for the country's expanding waistlines. The problem is that the same things that make snacks taste good ? sugar, salt, calories ? also make them fattening. And many Americans don't want to sacrifice taste at snack time. Shaving a few calories enables companies to market their cakes, cookies and chips as healthier without the stigma of bad taste that goes along with some low-fat products.

It's just the kind of marketing that might attract Monica Olivas. She says she wants to lead a healthy lifestyle, including curbing her fat and caloric intake as much as possible. But most low-fat foods just don't appeal to her.

"Sometimes companies go too far and take out all the fat ? and all the flavor," says Olivas, a 29-year-old recruiter from Pico Rivera, Calif.

A NEW 'LIGHT'

The mid-calorie trend is a toned-down version of the "light" craze that started in the 1990s. Back then, "low fat" or "no fat" was all the rage. But the products often fizzled.

For instance, McDonald's rolled out the McLean Deluxe, a low-fat burger, in 1991. But the burger, which was in part made with seaweed, had dismal sales. It disappeared from restaurants within five years.

Similarly, Lay's in 1998 introduced Wow fat-free potato chips that use fat substitute Olestra. But the ick factor trumped healthiness when the Food and Drug Administration said the chips had to come with a warning that Olestra may cause abdominal cramping, loose stools, and that it inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients.

The FDA dropped the requirement for the label in 2004 after studying the matter. The chips were renamed "Light," but sales have not recovered.

"Originally, a lot of the diet stuff just wasn't good," says Richard George, chair of the department of food marketing at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. "People would say you could throw away contents and eat the box. But they've gotten better."

The new era of diet food started in the last decade. In 2007, companies began offering 100-calorie packs of popular snacks like Oreos cookies and Twinkies cakes. That's when brands started putting their focus on reducing calories ? without any flavor change.

Turns out, there's some science behind all this calorie slashing. Nutritionists say it's not necessary to cut out all the "junk" foods in your cupboard or to take all the fat or calories out of them.

Reducing a nominal number of calories in your diet each day ? even from that morning coffee run or afternoon visit to the vending machine for chips ? is an effective way to battle obesity, says David Levitsky, professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University.

He says "if you typically have a 200-calorie cookie and you have a 160-calorie cookie instead" it won't make you hungrier at the next meal. And since obesity can be caused by as few as 20 excess calories a day, Levitsky says cutting a few at each meal makes a big difference.

But in order for that to work you have to eat the snacks in moderation. It becomes a problem when people overestimate how much more they can eat of nonfat ice cream or low-calorie chips, says Kelly Brownell, a nutritionist at Yale University.

"If consumption of ice cream and potato chips does not increase and people eat somewhat better versions, the outcome will be good," Brownell says.

TASTE IS KEY

First, companies have to convince dieters that their mid-calorie snacks are not only healthy, but tasty too.

Flavor is a key when Betty Kranzdorf, 55, considers eating foods with lower calories. She says she avoids reduced-calorie English muffins ("horrible texture and taste") but she'll pick up reduced-fat Pringles chips because she can't tell the difference between those and the originals.

"I won't buy 'low cal' just because it's 'low-cal,'" says Kranzdorf, a paralegal

from New York. "If the food I'm eating isn't satisfying, then I'll just go eat something that is more to my liking later ? which defeats the whole purpose."

With that in mind, Hershey's in June introduced Simple Pleasures, chocolate with 30 percent less fat. A serving size of six pieces equals 180 calories and 8 grams of fat ? that's 30 calories and 5 grams of fat less than the original Hershey's chocolate bar. The company is hoping the deficit is enough to lure chocolate lovers who want to eat healthier.

Hershey's developed the product after consumer research revealed that the No. 1 barrier for people to buy chocolate is the "perceived negative health benefits," says spokeswoman Anna Lingeris.

"We're hearing more and more that customers want healthier options as a balanced lifestyle becomes a more prevalent way of living," Lingeris says.

Similarly, Lay's in July rolled out two new flavors of its Kettle Cooked potato chips with 40 percent less fat. The brand, which fries chips in small batches so as to use less oil than the continuous frying process for regular chips, introduced "Applewood Smoked BBQ" and "Sun-Dried Tomato and Parmesan."

The company says it was able to lower the calories and fat without sacrificing taste: Regular Kettle Cooked chips have 160 calories and 9 grams of fat, while the reduced-fat versions have 130 calories and 6 grams of fat.

"The strategy behind mid-calorie offerings is finding the happy space between zero fat and regular products," says Tony Matta, vice president of marketing for Frito Lay, which makes Lay's chip brands.

But sometimes finding the right balance isn't enough ? marketing can be key. Dreyer's/Edy's (it's called Dreyer's on the West Coast and Edy's on the East) learned that the hard way.

The company in May rolled out an ad campaign that emphasizes that Slow Churned ice cream is half the fat and one third of the calories of regular ice cream ? but the company avoids using the word "light."

Why? Because when Dreyer's/Edy's began selling Slow Churned ice cream in 2004, the company labeled the product "light." But ice cream buyers didn't take to the word, and the company stopped advertising the brand using it. In fact, the company eventually stopped advertising the product altogether after 2007, although it still sold it in stores.

"'Light' used to be a word that consumers had a lot of negative perception ... because of the taste experience," Eiseman says. "For ice cream, taste is king, first and foremost ... they'd rather have great taste and half the fat, rather than OK taste and no fat."

The new packaging and ad campaign for the product, which has about 120 calories and 4.5 grams of fat compared with 150 calories and 8 grams of fat in regular Dreyer's mint chocolate chip, has the tagline "1/2 the Fat, 1/3 Fewer Calories than Regular Ice cream." (The company acknowledges that 4.5 grams of fat is not quite "half" of 8 grams of fat, but Dreyer's/Edy's brand manager Jen Eiseman says the marketing campaign took a the liberty of rounding in order to focus on the healthier aspects of the slow-churn ice cream.

"There's been a shift culturally from extreme dieting ... and giving up food altogether," Eiseman says. "Now it's not about giving things up, but finding healthier ways of having it all."

Katie Couric Reveals Bulimia Battle on Talk Show - iVillage

They're from different generations, but Katie Couric and Demi Lovato share an all-too-common problem. While interviewing Lovato on her daytime chat show Katie, Couric revealed that she, too, had struggled with bulimia as a young woman.

"I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," said Couric, 55.

The news anchor was binging and purging while attending the University of Virginia, and she remembers well what she was experiencing at the time.

"I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that?s wrong, you?re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself," she recalled. "Whether it?s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn?t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that."

Couric eventually overcame her eating disorder with the help of a therapist. Lovato, too, went to treatment for her eating disorder, and says it was extremely challenging.

"Treatment was so difficult at first. I remember walking around saying, 'I'm in prison!'" Lovato, 20, told Couric. "But they needed to have those strict rules in order for me to understand how sick I was."

In fact, the "Give Your Heart a Break" singer says that she only recently began to feel comfortable in her body.

"I've been getting used to the changes in my body. When I got out of treatment I gained 30 pounds, and my weight fluctuated a lot and I had a really hard time dealing with it," Lovato admitted. "Obviously I'm still going to deal with it for the rest of my life, but I'm in a good place now."

As a web extra, Couric talked to therapist Dr. Cynthia Bulik about how eating disorders are treated. Watch the conversation below!

NFL 2012

Golden Tate Wide receiver Golden Tate of the Seattle Seahawks makes a catch in the end zone to defeat the Green Bay Packers on a controversial call by the officials at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington.

Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images.

So?when we first started talking, I thought it would be fun to poke at the replacement refs a bit, maybe illustrate that they weren't prepared to operate on the level the NFL requires. But never in my worst nightmares did I imagine we'd see what just happened on?Monday Night Football. The outcome of a regular-season NFL game, one of 16 in the season, was determined by the replacement refs, and they got it irrevocably wrong.

I'm speaking, of course, of the game that just concluded between the Seahawks and the Packers,?a game that came down to the very last play, and a game which illustrated beyond a doubt that the replacement officials simply are not qualified for the NFL. Like I've said before, it's not due to lack of effort or desire, but simply due to a lack of ability. Just like we wouldn't expect a high school player to keep pace with Ray Lewis, it's unfair to think the replacements can handle the pressure and intensity of a stage that they've never been on.

Let's be clear: We're past the preseason now. These games really matter, and the Packers just lost one that counts for real, one that by all rights they should have won. As a divisional rival, it pains me to say this, but the Packers got royally horsebuggered on that last play, and this could have serious implications down the road when it comes to playoff seeds and homefield advantage.

One of the main points Commissioner Goodell has always harped on is protecting the shield: not letting anything tarnish the brand of the NFL. Commissioner, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but right now the shield is tarnishing faster than a sailor's virtue in a two-dollar whorehouse. Players see it; coaches see it; fans see it. These refs are not fit to stand in for the men you've locked out for what is increasingly looking like nothing more than simple greed?attempting to squeeze blood from a stone simply because you can. The NFL is America's No. 1 sport in part because everyone watching it knows that the players determine the outcome of a game, not the refs. As of right now, you're hurting business by putting a product out on the field that challenges that belief.

We all know that the regular refs sometimes get calls wrong, but never this egregiously, never this overtly. Sure, they may miss a pass interference or a holding call, but they always mark off the right yardage, and there's a trust that they'll get the vast majority of the calls right. Right now, there's no trust for the replacement refs. We've seen them make mistake after mistake, and it'll only get worse as players and coaches continue to push the envelope to see what they can get away with (extra timeouts are pretty awesome, not gonna lie).

As a player, as someone whose paycheck relies on the fans' interest and their consumption of this game, I'm asking you to do what's best for the NFL and get the regular refs back on the field. It may sting your pride, and that of the owners who employ you, but at the end of the day this is a business, and a very successful one at that. I'm asking you: Please don't risk alienating your customers over something that should never have been an issue in the first place. Bring the regular refs back before it gets even worse.

Army Tankers Wife: New Wellness Center at Carlisle Barracks

In this age of benefit cuts, the Army at Carlisle Barracks will begin offering a new free benefit on Monday to anyone in the midstate with a valid military identification card. Military retirees and their families, National Guard and Reserve members and their families, and Department of Defense civilians all can use the Army Wellness Center, just inside the post?s main entrance off North Hanover Street in Carlisle.? The key word is Wellness.

??????

??????

The Army is embracing the same concept of wellness to prevent disease ? and cut costs ? that the corporate world and other parts of government have been on to for years now, said Col. Stephanie Wilcher, director of the Dunham Army Health Clinic at Carlisle Barracks. But instead of limiting the center to the active Army soldiers who live on the post and their families, the Army is taking the big-tent approach.
The midstate has a boatload of people who carry some form of military ID, besides those on active duty.
Barracks and U.S. Army War College spokeswoman Carol Kerr said an estimated 51,000 military retirees live in Pennsylvania. Several thousands call the midstate home and already depend on the post to buy their food at the commissary and everything else at the Post Exchange.

Now, the wellness center will give them more reasons to come, such as biofeedback, stress reduction and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep the pounds off by eating and exercising right.
Wilcher said folks don?t already have to be enrolled in the military?s health care system ? known as Tricare ? or be registered with the Veterans Administration to use the center. All they need is that military ID card, and an appointment. The center won?t accept walk-ins.

Carlisle Barracks is just the third Army post in the country to get a wellness center, after Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Hood, Texas, where the centers opened in 2011. Center Director Cory Erhard, one of six civilians staffing the North Middleton Twp. center, said the Army plans to eventually locate wellness centers on all major active Army installations nationwide, including Fort Meade, Md. The goal is a consistent standard of wellness no matter where a soldier and his or her family is stationed, he said. The center?s outreach will extend beyond serving the ID-card carrying community outside the post. Erhard said a mobile version of the center will offer screenings and services to students at Cumberland-Perry Vocational Technical School. The school was chosen because it takes in students from a cross-section of area school districts.? Kerr said the Army picked Carlisle Barracks to be among the first posts to get a center because the Army?s future leaders are here, referring to the U.S. Army War College students who spend a year at Carlisle Barracks to prepare for assignments higher up the Pentagon ladder.

The center is a welcomed addition, in contrast to the threat the barracks and the Army War College have been living under for the past few years due to Pentagon budget cuts.? The Army Physical Fitness Institute ? similar in concept to the wellness center but not open to people outside the post ? was eliminated and three other institutes downsized. Pentagon budget-cutters proposed closing the Army Heritage and Education Center and moving it to the Washington, D.C., area, but that plan appears to have been abandoned for now and center funding remains intact. ?It?s definitely an investment in the Army War College and Carlisle Barracks,? Kerr said of the center. ?I think our future looks bright.?

Longtime NBA scout, advisor Kessler dies at 82

NEW YORK (AP) Marv Kessler, a wisecracking basketball guru who preached the fundamentals of the game in a half-century career that spanned high school, college and the NBA, has died. He was 82.

He had been diagnosed with cancer several years ago and died Wednesday at NYU Medical Center, according to longtime friends.

Kessler graduated from North Carolina State in 1958 after playing on the basketball team for three seasons. He coached at Martin Van Buren High School in his home borough of Queens before leaving to become head coach at Adelphi University on Long Island in 1972. He compiled an 88-60 record in six seasons with the Panthers.

He was an assistant coach at Davidson from 1979-81 and then began his association with the NBA, serving as an advance scout for Detroit, Washington, Portland and Sacramento. For a short time he was head coach of Hapoel Holon of the Israeli Professional League.

His reputation as a speaker at clinics, where he used humor and fundamentals to get his point across, extended nationwide. His days at the famed Five-Star Basketball Camp are legendary for his work with individual players and the full-camp lectures that informed and entertained.

Kessler was strictly from basketball's old-school. He stressed preparation and discipline, looking for an opponent's weakness, goading his players to be better, berating them when he thought that might do the trick. And he did it with a standup comic's touch - a Catskill mountain schtick melding John Wooden with Jackie Mason.

Shuttle Endeavour sets off for California museum

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:14pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Riding piggyback atop a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, the space shuttle Endeavour left its Florida home port for the last time on Wednesday and headed to California to begin a new mission as a museum exhibit.

After waiting two days for weather to clear, the specially modified carrier jet sped down the Kennedy Space Center runway shortly after dawn on Wednesday, the first leg of a planned three-day trek to the West Coast.

"There's sadness to see it go, but the space shuttle program had to end for us to move on to the next thing," said astronaut Greg Chamitoff.

NASA retired its three-ship fleet last year after completing the U.S. portion of the $100 billion International Space Station, a permanently staffed research complex that is owned by 15 nations and flies about 250 miles above Earth.

The agency is developing a spaceship and rocket that can fly astronauts to the moon, asteroids and eventually Mars. The first flight with a crew, however, is not expected until 2021.

Russia now flies NASA astronauts to the space station, at a cost of more than $65 million a seat. NASA hopes to buy rides from commercial companies beginning in 2017.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for Challenger, the shuttle lost in a 1986 launch accident that killed seven astronauts. It went on to fly 25 missions, including 12 to build and outfit the space station.

It flew the first assembly mission, carrying up the Unity connecting node, which was attached to the Russian Zarya base module.

"It's hard to believe it was 14 years ago," said Kennedy Space Center director Bob Cabana, a former astronaut who commanded NASA's first station assembly flight in 1998.

Endeavour is the second of NASA's three surviving shuttles to be sent to a museum. Discovery, NASA's oldest surviving shuttle, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center outside Washington.

Atlantis, which flew NASA's 135th and final shuttle mission in July 2011, will be towed down the road to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in November.

NASA lost a fourth shuttle, Columbia, in another fatal accident in 2003. That shuttle was not replaced.

HEADING WEST

Endeavour's cross-country piggyback flight had been due to begin on Monday, but a cold front moving over Texas and into the Gulf of Mexico delayed its departure for two days.

As the sun rose over the oceanside spaceport in Florida, the shuttle carrier jet took off through partly cloudy, pink-tinged skies and headed south for a farewell pass over the neighboring beachside communities.

The duo circled back around to the Kennedy Space Center to give workers and guests gathered at the runway a final glimpse of a shuttle in the sky.

Additional low flyovers past NASA centers in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas are planned, weather permitting, before the 747 lands at Ellington Field near the Johnson Space Center in Houston for the night.

Endeavour is due to depart Houston at dawn on Thursday, refuel at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas, and head to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, where it will land for the night.

On Friday Endeavour will be flown to northern California to pass by NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field and landmarks in and around San Francisco, Sacramento and other cities.

The final leg of the journey will take Endeavour on a tour over Los Angeles before the 747 jet touches down at Los Angeles International Airport around 11 a.m. PDT (2 p.m. EDT/1800 GMT).

The shuttle will be taken off the carrier jet and moved to a United Airlines hangar to be prepared for transport next month to the California Science Center, about 12 miles from the airport.

The trip to the museum, which will take place along Los Angeles neighborhood roads, requires some 400 trees to be cut down and the temporary removal of hundreds of utility poles, street lights and traffic signals to accommodate the 175,000-pound (79,379-kg) winged spaceship.

The California Science Center plans to plant 1,000 new trees to replace those taken down for Endeavour's road trip. The shuttle is due to go on display on October 30.

Using a laser to 'see' the smallest world: Powerful laser breathes new life into an old technology for studying atomic-level structures

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A multi-university team has employed a high-powered laser based at UC Santa Barbara to dramatically improve one of the tools scientists use to study the world at the atomic level. The team used their amped-up electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer to study the electron spin of free radicals and nitrogen atoms trapped inside a diamond.

The improvement will pull back the veil that shrouds the molecular world, allowing scientists to study tiny molecules at a high resolution.

The team, which includes researchers from UCSB, University of Southern California (USC), and Florida State University, published its findings this week in Nature.

"We developed the world's first free-electron laser-powered EPR spectrometer," said Susumu Takahashi, assistant professor of chemistry at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and lead author of the Nature paper. "This ultra high-frequency, high-power EPR system gives us extremely good time resolution. For example, it enables us to film biological molecules in motion."

By using a high-powered laser, the researchers were able to significantly enhance EPR spectroscopy, which uses electromagnetic radiation and magnetic fields to excite electrons. These excited electrons emit electromagnetic radiation that reveals details about the structure of the targeted molecules.

EPR spectroscopy has existed for decades. Its limiting factor is the electromagnetic radiation source used to excite the electrons -- it becomes more powerful at high magnetic fields and frequencies, and, when targeted, electrons are excited with pulses of power as opposed to continuous waves.

Until now, scientists performed pulsed EPR spectroscopy with a few tens of GHz of electromagnetic radiation. Using UCSB's free electron laser (FEL), which emits a pulsed beam of electromagnetic radiation, the team was able to use 240 GHz of electromagnetic radiation to power an EPR spectrometer.

"Each electron can be thought of as a tiny magnet that senses the magnetic fields caused by atoms in its nano-neighborhood," said Mark Sherwin, professor of physics and director of the Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology at UCSB. "With FEL-powered EPR, we have shattered the electromagnetic bottleneck that EPR has faced, enabling electrons to report on faster motions occurring over longer distances than ever before. We look forward to breakthrough science that will lay foundations for discoveries like new drugs and more efficient plastic solar cells."

US unemployment claims fell last week to 382,000

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell only slightly last week to a seasonally adjusted 382,000. The level suggests hiring remains weak.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications declined by 3,000 from the previous week, which was revised up. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose for the fifth straight week to 377,750, the highest level in nearly three months.

Applications were skewed higher two weeks ago by the fallout from Hurricane Isaac. But a Labor Department spokesman said there were no special factors last week.

Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. When they consistently fall below 375,000, it typically suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Employers added only 96,000 jobs last month, below the 141,000 in July and much lower than the average 226,000 added in the first three months of the year. Recent job gains are barely enough to keep up with the growth of the working age population and aren't enough to rapidly drive down unemployment.

"Businesses clearly remain reluctant to aggressively boost their workforces," said Jim Baird, chief investment strategist at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in a note to clients.

The unemployment rate dropped in August to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent. But that was only because fewer people were looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployment if they are actively looking for work.

The number of people receiving unemployment aid fell sharply earlier this month. About 5.2 million people received benefits the week ending September 1, the most recent data available. That's a drop of about 220,000 from the previous week.

The economy isn't growing fast enough to support much more hiring. It grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, down from 2 percent in the January-March quarter and 4.1 percent in the final three months of last year.

Growth isn't likely to get much better for the rest of this year. Economists expect the economy to grow at a roughly 2 percent pace.

High unemployment and sluggish growth prompted the Federal Reserve last week to announce several major steps to boost the economy. Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed will buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities a month until there is "substantial" improvement in the job market.

Bernanke said at a news conference that high unemployment is "a grave concern" that causes "enormous suffering."

Spain hesitation over aid unnerves markets

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets mostly fell Tuesday as investors worried about the global growth outlook and Spain's apparent delay in accepting a financial aid package.

Spain's markets have improved in recent weeks on expectations that the government will get some form of rescue loan from the 16 other eurozone countries. But Madrid has not made any formal request yet, likely wary of the policy conditions that would come attached.

The delay pushed the country's bond yields sharply higher on Monday, suggesting an increase in investor concern about the government's finances. The yields eased back somewhat on Tuesday after a bond auction was well-received. The sale of 12- and 18-month debt saw strong demand and resulted in lower interest rates than in the previous such auctions.

The auction result helped markets, but tensions remained ? by midafternoon in Europe, Spain's main stock index was still down 1.4 percent.

"Investors appear to be turning nervous," said Kintai Cheung, analyst at Credit Agricole CIB.

Elsewhere, Britain's FTSE 100 closed down Tuesday down 0.4 percent to 5,868 and Germany's DAX shed 0.7 percent to 7,347. France's CAC-40 lost 1.15 percent to 3,512.

Wall Street had a muted opening, with the Dow up 0.04 percent to 13,475 and the S&P 500 losing 0.3 percent to 1,457. Asian indexes closed mostly lower.

Analysts say the stock losses are also a pull-back from highs hit last week, when the U.S. Federal Reserve triggered a market rally with the announcement of new stimulus measures. Faced with a struggling recovery in the world's biggest economy, the Fed announced plans to buy $40 billion of mortgage bonds a month for as long as necessary as part of a strategy to boost borrowing and spending. The Fed also extended its pledge to keep short-term interest rates low until 2015, a year longer than its previous target.

The size of the program buoyed confidence in the global economy, and stocks rallied. Since then, however, investors have begun to re-examine the big picture and to see substantial headwinds on the horizon.

"I think the outlook in the near term for the global economy is still fairly negative," said Peter Elston, strategist at Aberdeen Asset Management in Singapore. "I suspect that further weakness is just around the corner, which might explain the greater than expected easing by the Fed."

Losses began earlier in the day in Asia. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 9,123.77. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.3 percent to 20,601.93 and Australia's S&P ASX/200 fell 0.2 percent to 4,394.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan also fell. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.9 percent to 2,059.54 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.6 percent to 859.44.

Bucking the trend was South Korea's Kospi, which gained 0.1 percent to 2,004.96.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 61 cents to $95.98 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.38, or 2.4 percent, to finish at $96.62 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday, when trading was marked by huge volatility.

In currencies, the euro fell slightly to $1.3047 from $1.3107. The dollar fell to 78.58 yen from 78.74 yen.

Taliban attack kills two U.S. troops; Harry unhurt

Afghan protesters set fire to effigy of U.S. president Obama, as they shout slogans during a demonstration in Jalalabad province. (Reuters) (Sep 14, 2012)

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan'sTaliban claimed responsibility on Saturday for an attack on a base which U.S. officials said killed two American Marines, saying it was in response to a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad.

Camp Bastion, in southern Helmand province, came under mortar, rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire late on Friday.

The assault also wounded several servicemen.

"The aim of this attack was revenge against Americans for the anti-Prophet movie," said Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf.

U.S. President Barack Obama has vowed to "stand fast" against violence which has been spreading since the amateurish film of obscure origin triggered an attack on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other Americans on September 11.

Britain's Prince Harry was at Camp Bastion at the time of the attack, but was unharmed.

Earlier this week, the Afghan Taliban said they were doing everything in their power to either kill or kidnap Queen Elizabeth's grandson in what they dubbed their "Harry Operations.

"Prince Harry was never in any danger," Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said, adding that it would investigate whether his presence on the base had motivated the attack.

ISAF has not confirmed the nationality of the two people killed in the attack on the base.

A spokesman for the Helmand governor said 17 bodies had been discovered and they were all thought to be insurgents killed in the fighting.

What does Romney wear to bed? "As little as possible"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The normally uptight Mitt Romney found himself on Friday pondering how best to answer the question, What do you wear to bed at night?

"I think the best answer is as little as possible," the Republican presidential candidate said.

There comes a time in every presidential campaign when a candidate faces light-hearted questions from morning television show hosts as a way to show a more personal side.

Thus Romney and his wife, Ann, were interviewed by Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan for ABC's "LIVE! with Kelly and Michael" show airing next Tuesday.

Things got interesting during the "Romney rapid-fire round" when the Romneys were asked to give quick replies to personal questions.

Ann revealed her guilty pleasure is doughnuts while her husband's answer was somewhat predictable: "Peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and chocolate milk."

Asked what was her most embarrassing moment, Ann Romney had a doozy: the time she and her husband spent the night at the White House when George W. Bush was president and Ann decided to do some exploring.

Opening a door, she said she was shocked at what she found: "It was George Bush having a massage."

"He was covered up. I was so embarrassed that the next time I saw him I didn't know what to say. He looked at me and winked and said, 'I look pretty good, don't I?'" she said.

The Romneys' favorite TV show? ABC's "Modern Family."

Romney initially misfired when asked who he would like to play Ann in a movie about the Romneys.

"Gene Hackman," he said, having misheard the question and thinking he was supposed to say who he would want to play him.

He finally settled on Michelle Pfeiffer for the Ann Romney role after pointing out Hackman had dressed up as a woman in the movie, "Bird Cage."

And Romney showed some knowledge of popular culture.

"I'm kind of a Snooki fan. Look how tiny she's gotten - her spark-plug personality," he said.

Nicole Elizabeth "Snooki" Polizzi is a cast member on the MTV reality show "Jersey Shore" and recently had a baby.

As for pet peeves, Romney said Ann does not always squeeze the toothpaste tube from the bottom up and doesn't always put the cap back on.
